Griffin Paisley, who creates modular ambient music under the moniker Constant Shapes, is a sound designer, producer, and artist from Los Angeles. At just 22 years old, Griffin has done sound design and preset work for Output Inc., Novation/Focusrite, and Minimal Audio, as well as released EPs on numerous labels around the globe, including Desert Trax (USA), Bassic Records (AUS), Onedotsixtwo (UK) and Inquiry Records (USA). Described as creating a deep and uplifting atmosphere while exploring generative sounds and semi-random sequences with modular synthesizers, Griffin's music has gained him the support of Desert Dwellers, GMJ, Tripswitch, Moontribe, and more.
In this session, Griffin will be using VCV Rack to have attendees follow along the making of a basic patch with him as he creates a melody and adds a few modulation sources. To really show the fun and madness of the hardware, he will do some improvisations on the patch as well to show you the endless possibilities for sound generation. Griffin will show first-hand how to successfully integrate modular synths with DAWs as he takes us through his process, step-by-beautiful-music-making-step towards creating colorful new shapes in the medium of sound.
Attendees will get a solid grasp of the technology and culture of modular synths in the production world as they explore their options for hardware. Griffin will use his hardware to give a visual context as he covers ambient modular patches, the vocabulary on synths in a modular context, explains control voltage, and discusses why and when modular synthesis is effective for signal flow. He'll also give his recommendations for modular artists and music to check out, as well as the best starting points for those looking to invest in a system.
